Therapy and treatment
Treatment Approaches
Individual and Group Therapy
If you are considering therapy, you may be interested in individual or group sessions. Let’s take a closer look at the differences so you can decide what is best for you.
Individual sessions are typically 50 minutes long and take place once a week on a set day and time. We will work on identifying a treatment plan early on, focusing on your therapy goals. While the plan often aligns with your desired improvements, I may offer suggestions based on my clinical judgment. Throughout our work together, we will have check-ins to assess your progress, which involves completing brief questionnaires roughly once a month. The duration of therapy will be determined based on your goals and the progress made toward change.
Group sessions offer the benefit of connecting with others who share similar life experiences. This can be reassuring, affirming that you are not alone in your journey. Group sessions last 1.5 hours and follow a structured timeline, typically spanning a total of 12 sessions. Each session focuses on teaching a specific skill for that week. If you are interested in joining a group, we will have an intake before and a follow-up session after completing the group. I do ask everyone to commit to the full 12 weeks to enhance group cohesion.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used and effective treatment that focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In CBT, you work with a therapist to identify and challenge negative thought patterns that contribute to emotional distress and unhelpful behaviors. By learning practical skills and techniques to change these patterns, you can develop healthier ways of thinking and coping, ultimately improving your overall mental well-being and resilience in facing life’s challenges.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is a specialized treatment for anxiety disorders, particularly effective for those with phobias and OCD. This approach involves gradually exposing you to feared situations or thoughts in a safe and controlled environment, allowing you to confront your fears without resorting to avoidance behaviors. By learning to manage your anxiety during these exposures, you can reduce fear over time and regain control, ultimately enhancing your confidence and ability to engage in daily activities.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a powerful therapeutic approach that encourages you to accept your thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or avoiding them. ACT helps you identify your core values and commit to actions that align with those values, even in the presence of difficult emotions. By fostering psychological flexibility, this therapy empowers you to live a meaningful life, promoting both acceptance of your experiences and commitment to positive change.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is a structured treatment designed to help individuals process and overcome the effects of trauma. This therapy focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful thoughts related to the traumatic experience, enabling you to develop a more balanced perspective. Through guided discussions and exercises, CPT helps you understand how these thoughts influence your emotions and behaviors, empowering you to regain control over your life and improve your overall well-being.
